Giant Pumpkins in Elk Grove? You betcha partner! Bring the whole family down to this years Giant Pumpkin Festival and enjoy a rootin tootin good time with a rodeo theme. This Saturday and Sunday Oct 2nd and 3rd in Elk Grove Regional Park. There will be activities galore for all ages, and of course the famous pumpkin regatta on Sunday at noon.
Yes, you read that correctly…a pumpkin regatta, and yes, they do float! After the weighing and judging of the giant pumpkins contestants in the regatta cut them open, hollow them out and jump inside for a chance at pumpkin floating fame. The racers paddle their giant pumpkin boats from one side of the pond to the other for a cash prize and the glory of keeping a tricked out giant pumpkin afloat. Of course not all of them always make it, and that adds to the fun and excitement of watching this kooky race and seeing some of the pumpkins, and their occupants, go belly up in the pond.
Every year there is a scarecrow contest that relates to the chosen theme of the festival as well as a recipe contest. This year they are looking for the best dessert recipe. There are carnival games, vendor booth’s, arts and crafts, a petting zoo, a children’s play area, live performances of music and demonstrations, fabulous pumpkin based food treats as well as various ethnic food choices, pony rides, a hay maze, much, much more. And of course.. there are pumpkins for sale!
Enjoy the display of the giant pumpkins and other produce that is on display and being judged from all around our region. Pack a blanket and enjoy a live band and a picnic lunch in the beautiful scenery of Elk Grove Regional Park. Families come from all around to this wonderful two day family event to enjoy all it has to offer.
There will be family entertainment from two stages throughout the weekend including hot country sounds from Diablo Road (Saturday) and The Chris Gardner Band (Sunday). Other featured acts include Karen Quest, Cowgirl Tricks, “Hurricane” Sam Rudin, Road 88, Deer Park Avenue, Elk Grove Swing Time Orchestra, and the Thunderfoot Cloggers.
Admission is free and parking is 10.00, visit the giant pumpkin festival’s webpage link below for a printable $5.00 off coupon. The festival is open from 10am-5pm Saturday and Sunday. This festival is something that my family looks forward to every year, and it never disappoints. Our son loves to interact with the local firemen that park their engines in the field next to the children’s area and give tours of the trucks. Another high light of his is to take a ride on the little train that goes on a loop through the park, and of course to find and say hello to Peter Pumpkin the festival’s mascot. Come to the festival and start an annual tradition with your family, it is a great way to welcome in all the fun that Fall has to offer.
