Dave Whitmire - Class of 1964 Next to graduate was Dave Whitmire, who went all the way through school in Davis and graduated in 1964. Reflecting back on going pheasant hunting along F Street, he remembers learning the joys of camping and fishing at an early age. He liked being able to bike everywhere around town and remembers being very involved with sports in school. Dave was on the track team (shotput), but his passion was for football. In fact, he looks back and admits that playing football was his biggest reason for going to school. It didn’t hurt that Dave was really good at playing football and was named to the Golden Empire League first team on defense in his senior year. That same year, his work as a tackle was recognized when he was given the Haas lineman of the year award. Cal Crabill, one of the teachers at DHS when Dave was there, remembers him as "one tough hombre" who could take care of himself on and off the field. Dave headed off to Southwest Texas State to play more football, and get a college education. When he could see that playing football wasn’t going to be his career, he returned to Davis and earned a teaching credential at UC Davis.
