Nancy Whitcombe Roe - Class of 1960

The first of our spotlight graduates was known as Nancy Whitcombe when she attended the old central Davis elementary, located about where the Teen Center is at 3rd and B.  However, the school got so crowded when Nancy was in second grade that her whole class had to walk over to Davis Community Church and go up to the classrooms on the second floor while the city was working on new elementary schools in other parts of town.  Nancy has fond memories of the many activities in town, especially picnic day where her two brothers won the greased pig competition so often that they stopped having that contest because they knew the Whitcombe boys would win it.

After going through junior high in what is now the District administrative and preschool center, she moved on to Davis High School when it took up the area now holding City Hall at the corner of Russell/5th Street and B Street.  Although her younger brother would get to attend the new Davis High School, she was the last graduating class at the old school.

Nancy says she can still taste the delicious hamburgers at A&W, can still see the beautiful Lanz dresses at Pauline’s and can still remember hanging out with her friends at Foster’s Freeze and Quessenberry’s on 2nd Street.
