Watermelon Music, owned by Jeff Simons and Ron Cowden, is the "go-to" place for all musicians in and around Davis. Located at 207 E Street, the property has an impressive showroom as well as 20 practice rooms. At Watermelon Music, you can take lessons and get everything you need to play almost any instrument. "We're more than just guitars," Jeff says, laughing.

Jeff grew up traveling with his father to the music stores from Lodi to Fresno. His father was a road representative and traveled from music store to music store, all the way from Lodi to Fresno. Summers saw Jeff riding with his father to music stores, and he remembers "good ones and bad ones, smoky ones and brightly lit ones," and he credits that experience with understanding what kind of music store he wanted to run when the time came for him to take that chance. He worked part time in a music store in high school and when he was a junior in college, he transferred to UC Davis where he started working Part time at Davis Music in 1989, eventually becoming manager. On April 1, 1996, he bought the music store. "April Fools Day," he remarks. From the very beginning, Jeff wanted his store to be what musicians wanted in a music store. He says that they "try to be the store for all musicians in the community."
