The Davis Aquadarts, the town’s oldest swimming program dating back to 1960, now includes more than 700 kids a year, all from the ages of 6 to 18. Of these 700, head coach Stu Kahn can easily say the program’s youngest members, which make up the first level Blue Group, are the most excited and anxious to swim. "When their group starts at three o’clock, they will stand, looking at the clock and right when it ticks three o’clock they all jump in!"
The Aquadart’s Blue Group includes approximately 40 first- second-, and third-grade kids, who are at least 6 years of age and able to swim one lap across the pool. Blue Group Coach Brad Winsor, who has been coaching for 13 years, describes the instruction as rudimentary, but fun-based, "We focus on general technique, like body position and learning the different strokes, but we mainly make sure the kids are having fun and enjoying themselves." Practice begins with laughter and chasing, making the Blue Group, as Stu appropriately describes, "a short-span theater," that easily resembles a 10-minute recess.
When practice starts, the Blue Group hits the water with fins and kickboards and swims for a solid 45 minutes under Brad’s boisterous voice. |
