When first approaching the Kathmandu Kitchen, it may not seem very intriguing, but upon entering, the color and art brings life to the small restaurant that keeps customers coming back. Navinder Bhandal, originally from India, took over the restaurant from the previous owners two years ago. Most of his work is done in managing but, "I know cooking," he confirmed. At 23, he started learning about the restaurant business from his brother, who sponsored him to come to the United States when he was 21.
Previously, Navinder worked with his brother in San Francisco, but he moved to Davis to "Raise a family," he explained. When asked to compare working in Davis to working in San Francisco, he said, "Everybody [in Davis] is so nice compared to a big city like San Francisco. They’re friendly." But he also said that it is "harder to compete here [with] all [of the] new restaurants coming up next door and down the street," but because he has a different menu, he doesn’t feel that he is competing any extra with the other Indian place in town.
