It was an early Saturday morning. The air was crisp and accompanied by a few chilling winds. Half of Davis was somewhere asleep and cozy under their comforters, and I was hundreds of feet flying above them. And by flying, I mean that I was literally steering a private aircraft for the first time in my life. It was my second time ever being in an airplane, and this time I got to be the pilot. Of course, sitting beside me and making sure that I didn’t plummet into the ground was Jonathan Bar-or, one of the instructors of Cal Aggie Flying Farmers (CAFF). Although it’s common knowledge that Davis has its own airport, many people have lived in Davis for years without ever having heard of Cal Aggie Flying Farmers. A collective of former World War II pilots, farmers and aviation enthusiasts formed CAFF in 1947 as a non-profit organization for the purpose of providing accessible flight instruction and aircraft rental. Jonathan explains, "Our lessons are 40 percent cheaper than anywhere else because all of the money goes right back into aircraft." Located at the University Airport, Cal Aggie Flying Farmers isn’t directly affiliated with the university, and contrary to the belief that this is a private institution, flight classes are open to the general public.
