Acme Theatre Company is a performing group, based in Davis, that is run completely by its high-school-aged members, with a little help from Dave Burmester and other graduates of the program. There are a lot of stories floating around about Dave. It's clear that he is an amazing person who has put a lot of time, effort and love into his work with Acme. Emily Tracy, an Acme alumna and the production manager of Acme, tells a great story about her first encounter with Dave. She was volunteering with the Acme-run city of Davis summer theater program when a jolly old man came up to her. With no introduction, he asked "How tall are you?" Not knowing yet that she was talking to the one and only Dave Burmester, Emily hesitantly answered that she was five foot six. Dave nodded and said, "I need you in my show. The next all-cast rehearsal is on Tuesday. I'll see you there." Then he walked away, confident that the chance to be on stage, the chance to be a part of the theater was not something that could be denied.
Dave came by this attitude from experience. The seed for the Acme Theatre Company was planted at Davis High School. Dave was an English teacher at Davis High and in the 1980-81 school year, Dave stepped in and directed the play "Thurber's Carnival" to give the current drama teacher a break. Theater |
