Not long after the conveyor belts have slowed to a halt, various materials still strewn across their lengths waiting to be sorted, I stand at the entrance of the now-sleeping giant that is Davis Waste Removal’s recycling facility. On a far wall, blocks of compressed recyclables that rival my sophomore year townhouse in size sit awaiting transport. John Giesler, DWR’s operations manager and a man with more than 25 years of recycling and waste removal experience to his name, glances nervously at my feet.
"You might want to be careful walking around here with those shoes," he says politely.
Apparently open-toed flats are not the ideal footwear for touring a facility where glass is continuously collected and crushed, but in my rush home from work I obviously hadn’t given the matter enough thought. We continue our tour - with me treading carefully - as John explains DWR’s role in Davis’s recycling program.
