On the corner of Second and E streets in downtown Davis, the colorful display in the windows of de Luna Jewelers will capture your attention. In the first window you will see Oaxacan (pronounced wa-hah-kan) creatures made of wood, although it looks as if they were made of rainbows. Purple, green, blue, red and the rest of the colors you can imagine. Next, you will see a tempting door. When you go in, you will see cases of rings and large glass display cases of pendants, bracelets and necklaces. They also have Native American art, pottery, tapestries and jewelry. At the desk in the back of the store, you might see Dick Luna, the owner of de Luna Jewelers, helping a happy customer. Dick Luna has a gentle smile that you can see in his brown eyes. His hair is sprinkled with gray, and he normally wears a dress shirt to work. He has loved jewelry since he was 17. Dick started by working in small firms, then he decided to start his own jewelry store. He has owned de Luna since 1967. His favorite part is working with people to design jewelry. He also restores old beat-up jewelry that his customers bring in. Dick says, "We make a lot of our pieces. We have a staff here who is paid to help people design like I do. A lot of people come in and have their own rings made." |
