In 1981, if you were looking for the Redwood Barn Nursery you would look for "the barn at the end of 5th Street." The barn is in the same place, but East Davis has grown up around it. These days, you won't find the Redwood Barn at the end of 5th Street. It's now "between L Street and the Post Office, on the same side of the street as the DMV," which is not as catchy. While the location and its surroundings have changed, the principles that have made the Redwood Barn Nursery successful have not. The spirit of educating people about plants and how they grow has made the Redwood Barn Nursery successful for more than 20 years.
In the center of the Redwood Barn Nursery is a picnic table. It sits somewhat askance on the ground, nestled next to a big bed of trees. It's easy to imagine this picnic table in someone's backyard - maybe a family's backyard; and the picnic table is the center of everything. On nice nights, the family eats outside on the picnic table, sitting out late while the sun goes down, parents relaxing on the benches while the kids run around before bedtime. The nursery looks like a wild garden with an assortment of flowers, plants and trees to examine, and the picnic table is also worth a look. It is a symbol of all the ways in which a family can live and play with a garden surrounding them.
