Try to think about how long you've done just about anything consecutively. Perhaps you're proud that you've called your mother every week; or that you've never forgotten your spouse's birthday; or that you've managed to finish one book every month for the last 12 years.
But other than wake up, eat or scratch your head, have you done anything . every day . for the last 34 years? Better yet, have you done anything that required strenuous exercise every day for the same time period? Davis-residents Curt Miller and Mary Horton have. As two of the longest-swimming members of Davis Aquatic Masters, Miller and Horton have swam nearly every day for the last 34 years (other than holidays, weekends or vacations).

They were swimming when Gerald Ford was our president. They were swimming when the Islamist students took over the government of Iran. They were swimming when Ronald Reagan demanded that Gorbachev "tear down this wall" . they were swimming when thousands of Germans finally did. Horton was perfecting her breaststroke as South Africa gained independence. Miller was doing laps when Bill Clinton said he did not do what you think he did with "that woman," . he was still swimming when the president admitted that, yeah, maybe he did. The two were under water at this country's darkest moments in September 2001 and came up for air when it went after those responsible and those not-so-much.
