He's traveled the world, worked in Washington, D.C., and met several politicians, even presidents. But Albert Kutternig, while very politically minded, is not a politician by profession. He is the owner and master pastry chef at Konditorei (pronounced Kon-DIT-or-eye) Austrian Pastry Café in Davis. Originally from Austria, Albert trained and worked in Vienna for 10 years. He then went to work training chefs and representing Austria in many different countries, such as Belgium, Hungary and Greece. He has worked in Washington, D.C., for the Hilton and in the Watergate Hotel. He's baked for Ronald Reagan, Elizabeth Taylor and several other celebrities, but has now planted his roots in Davis.
Albert, who came from a family of bakers, moved to Davis because it is where his wife's family lives, and he wanted to raise his three daughters on the countryside. Albert and his wife, Gloria Kutternig, both work in Konditorei, along with two to four other chefs and 10-12 employees. Of the people who come into his shop, he guesses that about 80 percent of them are regulars, many after their morning coffee fix.
Along with men in business suits and others in jeans and sweaters, Rose Lidster, a regular at Konditorei, sits at a table with a white embroidered tablecloth and a vase of fresh flowers. She isn't afraid to try different things when she comes in. "I like |
