The Memorial Union Games Area opened on Dec., 26, 1966. At the time, it had two billiard rooms, 16 bowling lanes and a few pinball machines to serve 8,000 students. Forty years and three to four renovations later, the MU Games Area is alive and active. It is now serving a student body that has tripled in size, in the capacity of arcade, classroom and home to a nationally ranked bowling team.
Descending the stairs into the MU Games Area for the first time causes a slight sensory overload. I never even noticed the billiard tables that fill up an entire backroom, because I was to busy listening to the buzz of excited bowlers, the clattering sound of students cashing in their dollars for game tokens, and the electric background music of 55 arcade games that fill the floor.
It is here that I found Gerald (Jerry) Nunes, the MU Games Area director, calmly filling out paperwork in his office as his staff floated in and out. Jerry arrived on the Davis scene in 1978 from San Jose State to coach the men's bowling team.
Now he teaches six classes for bowlers of all skill levels - from hopeless beginners to true competitors, like last year's men's bowling team which came in third place at the national championships in Wichita, Kansas.
