An evening of flavor describes our dining experience at Kabul Cuisine, the Afghan restaurant on Second Street in downtown Davis. I am familiar with Afghan food and have eaten at the restaurant several times, so I was excited for Cary and Jon to experience it.
Our evening started with drinks at the bar of Pasta?, located just down the street from Kabul. My boyfriend, Rick Nudelman, joined us. Pasta? has a very stylish atmosphere. I ordered a mimosa, and the bartender hand-squeezed the orange juice into the glass of champagne. A few friends of Cary's and Jon's joined us for the pre-dinner cocktails, then we headed to Kabul for an Afghan dinner.
We were greeted first by Nasrath, one of the waiters. Sara, the owner, recognized me from a previous visit with my father, and recalled that the three of us had a good time talking about Afghanistan.
The restaurant opened in March 2005 by Sara, and then she hired her small staff: Nasrath and Mustafa. Sara was originally planning to open the restaurant in the Bay Area, mostly due to the larger population. However, after driving around Davis, she fell in love with the atmosphere of the town. Originally from Afghanistan, Sara was hoping to bring a bit of the culture to the restaurant, which has since proven successful.
