They’re sleek! They glide down the road while bearing their loads, turning heads with lights flashing and bells ringing. They’re versatile! They travel through the most congested areas with ease, weaving through street traffic and crowded pedestrian sidewalks. They’re eco-friendly! They need no fuel, emit no gases and require very little maintenance. They’re the River City Rickshaws, and they’re just a call or hail away from redefining the meaning of "from point A to point B."
Benjamin Eisele is the guy behind River City Rickshaws. His family has been in Davis since the 1960s, and his father used to be part of the campus faculty. He started the rickshaw business earlier this year in July, originally operating out of West Sacramento. He decided later to exclusively serve the Davis area, where the rickshaw bikes are actually stored. "The Sacramento area was just too crazy to deal with," Benjamin said. "There would be cars whizzing by in the evening, and you knew some of them were driving drunk. Davis is way more bicycle friendly." These days, Benjamin will only work in Sacramento for special events, such as weddings or reunions.
