Would you truly know what to do if faced with a choking or heart attack victim? The Red Cross is the organization that promotes that knowledge. Davis has some heroines and heroes who have known what to do and have applied their Red Cross training to save lives. Their stories, along with the Red Cross’ dedication to the public’s health and safety, illuminate the need for the Red Cross and the important benefits of the training it offers.
Donna Neu, executive director for the Yolo County Chapter of the American Red Cross, told a story that helps put it all in perspective. She was on a late-night flight. From a darkened interior, a passenger cried out. "A woman needed help; she was not breathing," Donna said. "Two other women came up. One was a physician’s assistant. Another gal, who had just learned CPR [cardiopulmonary resuscitation], helped. Another hour into the flight, another woman called out that her husband was having a heart attack." Both of these victims received the care they needed because others had the necessary training. "It made me realize how vulnerable we are in the air," Donna added.
