January is upon us, which means two things: the crisp, cold beginnings of anew and a time to get into high gear with those New Year's resolutions. Whether it's losing weight, learning to play the violin or finally taking that dream vacation, I personally suggest starting off the year of 2008 by making your home more sustainable. 

It's easier than you think. Just open your doors to the perfect pet, the red worm, California red, or compost wiggler as it is affectionately known. It is small, quiet, doesn't require walking or petting, it can live permanently in the garage or under the sink, eat only the scraps from your kitchen table, and they're giving them away at the student Co-ops on campus.

Now, I must admit that, like most people, I'm not the biggest fan of bugs. I prefer Mother Nature's creepy crawling members to stay outside where they belong. However, after spending time sharing organic, Disney-shaped animal crackers with the volunteer members of Project Compost, I too feel that I could welcome some wiggling, well-meaning worms into my home.
