From movie theater to live musical theater to all-purpose event house and back again to movies - this time those with art-house flair - the Varsity Theatre has taken a long and interesting journey to arrive as the sterling independent cinema centerpiece of downtown Davis it is today. Take a trip to 616 Second Street any day of the week, and you can see critically acclaimed first-run independent films for a lower cost than the admission price of most mainstream multiplexes. This is all thanks in large part to Sinisa Novakovic and Jon Fenske, the two men who run the Varsity and enhance the community as local guardians of sophisticated entertainment.
Sinisa, 40, is a successful business owner who runs Mishka's, a busy café that's a few shops down the street from the Varsity. He also has a Ph.D. in microbiology. Jon, also in his 40s, is a civil engineer who works in hydrology for the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
They co-own the theater business to dazzle patrons with upscale tastes, which means movie lovers won't find action-packed blockbusters or horror flicks when they pay a visit. "It's not our niche," says Jon, who, along with Sinisa, opened the theater on April 6, 2006. "I always want movies we show to have good critical reviews."
