2014 UC Davis Bike Auction
This past Saturday on October 11, a crowd of people gathered to bid for bikes.
The UC Davis bike auction is hosted by Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS). Auctioned off were hundreds of abandoned bikes that had accumulated over the past year. Although most of the bikes were not in the finest condition and in dire need of additional repair, the majority of bidders seemed pleased to find such great bargains. Prices were typically around the $20 to $100 range. The least-expensive bikes could be found in the latter half of the auction, when most of the people had left the premises.
The majority of the bikes displayed were mountain bikes and beach cruisers, with only a handful of good-quality of road bikes. Most bidders at the event were unaware of the bike conditions and began to bid more than the true value of the bikes.
For those who are thinking about attending the Spring Auction, I strongly suggest showing up half an hour early or near the end of the auction to avoid the crowd. All those who intend to bid must sign-in to receive a bid card. The auctioned bikes are not arranged in a specific order, so a good-quality bike could be auctioned off at any time of the event. And for those who get a seat early are guaranteed standing room and also have better chances of being seen since the auctioneer tends to only look toward the front for bid cards.
The event starts at 7:00 am in the morning and continues on until 3:00 pm in the afternoon with an estimated 100 bikes being auctioned off every hour. Usually the auction designates a viewing time from 8:00 am until 9:00 am before the auctioning actually begins. Due to the state of the abandoned and unwanted bikes, most auctioned bikes demand repair but I think the Bike Auction is the perfect place to start for those who are looking for a stable ride and are not afraid to put in a little money into fixing up a used bike. Check it out! You never what you may find and the auction itself is a great experience that no one should miss.
The Bike Auction takes place twice a year, once during mid-October and again in June, at the West Entry Parking Structure by Hutchinson Field
