College is fun. When I’m not working 4-hour shifts at the Pinkberry yogurt store or hustling to finish a paper on the day that it is due, I am usually grabbing food with a friend at a quaint cafe downtown or attending a typical college hang-out at someone’s apartment. Fun? Of course. But you would be surprised at how quickly college life gets mundane so this past weekend I decided to venture out of the norm.
My roommate ran the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco on Sunday and my housemates and I planned a house trip to San Francisco for the weekend to support her and tour the city for ‘fun’. Now quote-on-quote ‘fun’ was exactly what we had. Dancing around the Castro District after a few sips of our cranberry martinis and bites into our freshly baked white macadamia cookies. Racing up and down the windy streets of Fisherman’s Wharf to catch my roommate’s 13-mile finish. Feasting at the notoriously cheesy Hometown cafe in Oakland. Definitely a memorable weekend for the entire house. Despite having to cram like I had never crammed before for my first midterm of the quarter Sunday night, I have no regrets about going out of town at all. The two-day trip was exactly what I needed to spice up my routinely Davis college life and I definitely plan to get away more this quarter.
College goes by fast. Make as many memories as you can -while you can- because never will you experience as much freedom in life as you have now. When college life gets boring, make it interesting again by doing something out of the norm. Travel to somewhere new. Attend a new cardio class. Order a new dish at a new restaurant. Don’t be afraid to try something different and remember to have lots of fun while you’re at it!
