Opening Night: Readings by the Creative Writing Faculty

Listen to readings by award-winning fiction writers and poets from the UC Davis Creative Writing Program.  This program features Joshua Clover, Greg Glazner, Pam Houston, Yiyun Li, Joe Wenderoth, and Alan Williamson. Walk With Warren

Noon – 1 pm, Meet at Gazebo

Join Warren Roberts, the Superintendent Emeritus of the Arboretum and famous storyteller and punster for an always engaging noontime exploration of West End gardens.  Walks with Warren are held the second Wednesday each month, and take place in various collections of the Arboretum.  Check the schedule each month for the meeting place and location of each of these midweek tours. Poetry in the Garden: Spring Warren and Jill Stengel

Come hear Davis poets Spring Warren and Jill Stengel share their unique work surrounded by the beauty of the Arboretum! Spring Warren grew up on a Wyoming ranch, and is the author of The Quarter-Acre Farm: How I Kept the Patio, Lost the Lawn, and Fed My Family for a Year. Jill Stengel brings an interest in a number of writing efforts, and actively participates in the poet-moms listserv community.  This is a free public event. Folk Music Jam Session

12–1 p.m., Wyatt Deck, Old Davis Road, UC Davis

Folk musicians are invited to play together informally during an acoustic jam session on Friday, October 12, noon to 1:00 p.m. at the Wyatt Deck, located on Old Davis Road next to the redwood grove in the UC Davis Arboretum. Pull out your fiddles, guitars, mandolins, penny whistles, pipes, flutes, squeezeboxes (you name it) and join your fellow musicians for a little bluegrass, old-time, blues, Celtic, klezmer, and world music over the lunch hour. All skill levels welcome. Listeners welcome. Parking is available for $7 in Visitor Lot 5, at Old Davis Road and A Street. Science Café: How Plants and Animals Use Chemicals for Survival and Defense

Prof. Chris Jeffrey, Department of Chemistry, University of Nevada, Reno, will speak on chemical communications between plants and other organisms, or “chemical ecology.” Co-sponsored by Prof. Jared Shaw and the Chemistry Dept, this program is funded by the National Science Foundation. Guided Public Tour: Ornamental Grasses
10-11:30 a.m., Arboretum West End Gardens (meet at Nature’s Gallery Court on Garrod Drive)Come observe ornamental grasses in their finest season of the year, and learn more about the design and habitat contributions they make to the perennial landscape!  All ages are welcome.
