Show at Gallery 625
When a spouse asks “do these colors match” it is tempting to assume the question might be referring to what to wear. For Jeanne and Larry Powell this conversation is most often about the art. Sharing a common professional background as teachers, each has chosen a different and complementary artistic discipline: Larry as photographer and Jeanne as quilter. Together they create using camera and cloth, consulting on color choices, and supporting each other as they continue to grow as artists. The August exhibition at Gallery 625, “Husband and Wife Show,” will feature the digital images and quilts of the Powells.
“Sometimes I find myself with paper and pencil helping Jeanne figure out size or unit changes; sometimes she asks me if her colors are expressive,” said Larry. Jeanne said, “Sometimes I go out with Larry when he is taking photographs; often he will bring in a photograph he has just taken and printed out and we will discuss it. His work just seems to get better and better all the time.” Separately, the Powell’s “his and her” artistic pursuits are divergent; when combined, a rich palette of possibilities results – whether it’s Larry photographing Jeanne’s quilts for entries into exhibitions, or Jeanne planning how to turn one of Larry’s photographs into a quilt.
The exhibit’s opening reception will be held on Friday, August 3 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., coinciding with Woodland’s downtown First Friday Art Walk and will be attended by the artists, Jeanne and Larry. The reception’s featured wine will be from Berryessa Gap Vineyards, sponsored by Roth Ranch.
“Husband and Wife Show” will run through August 29 at Gallery 625, in the Erwin Meier Administration Building, 625 Court St. in Woodland. Regular gallery viewing hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For additional information, call YoloArts at 530-406-4844, or visit the website at yoloarts.org.
