Some events in Davis have a reputation for wild parties, others for lots of Lycra and bike helmets. Some events feature fresh produce, a pedal-powered carousel, and children fountain-dancing in their diapers. But only one annual Davis tradition has roving costumed mascots, a climbing wall, live music, food vendors, new cars from local dealers, a floating inflatable pig, information booths hosted by local businesses and fireworks.
Yes, once again, it’s time for Celebrate Davis! Equal parts outdoor fair, business expo, mixer, party, family night, and picnic, this community celebration exemplifies what makes Davis a great place to live. This year’s event will be held Thursday, May 19, located, as always, in Community Park between the Art Center and the high school practice fields. The fun starts at 4:30, and the fireworks start a little after 9:00 pm.
More than 100 local businesses and non-profit organizations will have booths where you can learn about what they have to offer. From AAA to Zipcar, Davis has all kinds of resources you might not know about. Pick up a few trinkets like free pens, magnets, water bottles, and totes, while you learn about landscaping, ballet lessons, recycled printer cartridges, the local cable access station, two local theatre companies, solar installation, insurance, cell phones, free checking, swim lessons, educational toys, local bat species, and much more. Get your eyebrows waxed and your blood pressure checked free!
What about music, you ask? No Davis event is complete without the Cal Aggie Band-Uh, and they’ll kick off the party at 4:30. They will be followed by three other local bands on the outdoor stage: The Remedies, Smack Jupiter and Fuzzy Dice.
And what would you like to eat? Surely you’ll find something to please you among more than a dozen food vendors.

Come prepared for fun! Take your picture with the inflatable globe, the costumed mascots, the ballerinas and actors. Conquer Rocknasium’s climbing wall. Bring sunscreen, a refillable water bottle and a blanket. But don’t bring your car if you can help it – do the Davis thing and bike. Free valet bike parking will be provided by the US Bicycling Hall of Fame. And a lucky few walkers may hail a passing pedicab for a ride home.
Pet owners who live near Community Park are reminded to make sure their animals are safely indoors from 9:00 to 9:30 for the fireworks show, and to provide a comforting environment for those who are sensitive to noise. The Chamber of Commerce has sent notices to veterinarians, groomers, pet sitters and pet stores all over town to help prepare pet owners for this brief disruption in their routine.
See you at Celebrate Davis!
