I can’t think of a more charming alley of shopping than the string of stores that wind around and behind The Mustard Seed on D Street in downtown Davis. The marker to spot this destination is, of course, the iconic red English phone booth on D Street. Follow the stone pathway back to a sweet selection of shops and services including Renew Denim, Han’s Tailor, Creme de la Creme, Hair Studio, Antiques Plus and Tea List.
I’ve written before how I adore the selection at Creme de la Creme, and I especially love to see how owner Christy Zamora has merchandised her assortments for the holidays. In true retail fashion, Creme de la Creme was set for holiday gift giving the day after Thanksgiving. You’ll see Christy in the store everyday (10:30am to 5pm) until December 25th when she will finally take a much needed day off! Gift wrapping is always complimentary at Creme and the perfect finish to any purchase.
If you’re hosting a holiday party, cookie exchange or Christmas Dinner, you will find a lovely selection of tableware and accessories to WOW your guests. If you have foodies, gardeners, Francophiles, teachers, bird lovers, and spa goers on your gift giving list this year, you will surely find something for them at this gem of a boutique. Just ask Christy for assistance; she asks just the right questions about your gift recipient, then voila – the perfect gift is found! It’s that easy!
After you cross several names off your gift list at Creme de la Creme, bring your shopping bags and take a few minutes to savor the perfect cup of tea at Tea List located a few doors down behind Antiques Plus. If you haven’t been there yet, make it a point this week to come either by yourself with your iPad, or bring a friend to relish in the loveliness together. The interior decor is what I call “contemporary cafe chic”….No grandmothers’ china tea cups here. Nahid, owner of the one year old tea room, has implemented a hip design aesthetic for her business. Soothing green (tea) wall color, warm wood tables and chairs, simple fresh flower centerpieces, and modern-influenced lighting set the tone for this petite cafe. The unique glass mugs, tea pots, and tea timers are a pleasant surprise to guests. It feels special at Tea List since most of us are so used to
paper to-go cups from the order and go places around town. The tea timers are given to guests to monitor and properly steep loose teas, but it is more than tea that is served at Tea List. Guests leave with an experience. Tea Time or afternoon tea is a ritual in some countries and cultures, not practiced regularly by the masses. It truly is a lost practice. Of course Davis has establishments that serve tea, even loose teas – but there is something about the serenity of this location that contributes to guests feeling removed from the hustle and bustle of downtown. It’s that feeling of being taken away – even for a short time – that is rejuvenating and oh so welcome!
The assortment of hot and cold teas, lunch menu items and pastries seal the deal for a return ticket – guaranteed! Traditional “Afternoon Tea” is served with an array of savory and sweet morsels to be enjoyed with hot pots of tea at Tea List.
This holiday season Nahid has gift baskets available for sale and is also able to customize a basket for your tea lover. Tea List is open Tuesday thru Thursday 10:00 to 5:30, Friday and Saturday 10:00 to 6:00 and Sunday 11:00 to 5:00. Tea List is closed on Mondays, and Christmas Day through January 3rd. Private parties and special occasions can be arranged with Nahid; think – wedding and baby showers, little girl tea parties, birthday parties. Please call Nahid at 530.750.2700 to arrange the details of your next party.
Park on D Street by the red English phone booth or on E and cut through the alley behind Chipotle and Peet’s.
