It has been said of mankind that we sing ourselves into existence. Certainly we celebrate our lives with rituals and markers. In recognition of this, Gallery 1855 hosts its annual Celebration of Life Festival on the second Sunday of October from 1 P.M. to 4 P.M. This free gala arts event will feature the premier performance of two new musical works specially commissioned for the event. Richard Chowenhill, a recent UC Davis graduate of music composition, will debut an original work for violin, flute, clarinet, French horn, and bassoon. Robert Vann Jr., who is currently Program Manager for the Sacramento Youth Symphony, will debut an original acapella duet with his wife Carly Neil. Both are music graduates of Sacramento State University.
Other treats of the day will include an interpretive dance performance created for the festival by Davis Poet Laureate Allegra Silberstein. Several poets, including Ms. Silberstein, will present poetic work created in workshops sponsored by Gallery 1855. More than 20 area artists will have stunning visual art hung in the gallery for the month of October; an open house where the public can meet the artists will also be a part of this special festival day.
