The last big fun at the California State Fair is this weekend so if you haven’t gotten to Cal Expo yet, this is your chance. The fair’s final day is Sunday, August 1st.
I’ve already been once this year with my beau, Michael, and his brother and fiancee, Patrick and Meaghan, who were visiting from Richmond, Virginia (that’s them in the picture with me to the left-I’m of course the one with beer in tow). They were duly impressed with the sheer largess of the event and despite the triple-digital heat, we saw just about every exhibit over a seven-hour visit.
While touring the garden, we had just a lovely time watching the crawfish and crawdads fight, maul and generally devour each other. The garden was magnificent as usual; endless varieties of summer fruits and vegetables that give me ideas for next summer’s garden and school me on successful growing techniques. I plan to stop by again this weekend to spend more time watching the cooking demonstrations to maybe pick up some skills to help improve my cooking class teaching abilities.
We did get those great margaritas from Hussong’s Cantina – they just hit the spot on a hot day and make smelling zillions of farm animals so much more fun. Note: their new location is right near the Expo Center #1 with all the exhibits. It’s a shady spot right by the lagoon and next to the main stage.
Don’t forget the Brewfest is this Saturday, July 31st starting at 5:00pm. Sponsored by the California Brewers Guild, the celebration will feature the winners of the Commercial Craft Competition.
In its 12th year, the Brewfest will showcases winners from all over the state, including our own Davis-local Sudwerk who took Gold for its Marzen and Signature Series Dunkel Weiss Bock and Silver for its Hefeweizen, and Sacramento’s River City Brewing Co. who took Gold for its Cap City Pale Ale and River City Kolsch. Sacramento’s Two River Cider Co. captured Silver for its Huckleberry Cider. You must be 21 to buy tickets, which are $15.00 per person in addition to admission fare.
