Since 1979, Fleet Feet has been a staple in Downtown Davis. A short 31 years later we are thrilled to enter the world of blogging with Davis Life Magazine. Everyone here at Fleet Feet Davis is enthusiastic about running, walking, and fitness, and this Summer we are taking it to a whole new level. With training groups, events, and a brand new race, 2010 is the year of Fleet Feet!
What do we love about running? Well, we love everything about it. Running gives you an opportunity to get outside, enjoy nature, work up a sweat, improve your cardiovascular fitness, tone your muscles, or chat with friends. For many, running is a reason to travel, an excuse for people to accomplish new goals or push themselves to new levels both physically and mentally. The feeling of crossing the finish line at your first 5K, 10K, Half-Marathon, Marathon, or Ultra Marathon is rivaled by almost nothing. Many of us have met new friends through running. Here at Fleet Feet, we love running so much, we can’t wait to come to work and share our enthusiasm with everyone who walks through the doors at 615 Second Street. To sum up, we’re running nerds, and proud of it!
Beyond our own personal love of running, the inspirational stories we hear from participants in our training groups makes us value what we do. Stories like that of Ulla Blatt Bendtsen, a participant in No Boundaries 5K Fall 2008, 10 Weeks to a 10K Winter 2009, and the Spring 2009 Half-Marathon Training, prove beyond inspirational. Ulla came to Davis from Denmark having never been a runner. She would attempt to run 2 miles once a week, and once a year participated in a big running event with her workplace . While looking for a new hobby in Davis, Ulla joined the beginning running group at Fleet Feet. The running bug bit, and she continued training with us, from 5K to 10K and finally to a half-marathon. At age 49 she ran completed her first ½ marathon in 2 hrs and 22 minutes, and “did not drop dead at the finish line!” Ulla goes on to say that she “trained with Fleet Feet’s training groups since the fall of 2008 – first I ran 5 K in the Davis Turkey Trot, then 10K in the Stampede and last May I passed the ½ marathon milestone along the American River Parkway – a goal I did not even think about setting for myself before I joined FF.” What makes Ulla’s story even more inspirational is the fact that she was diagnosed with MS in 1992, and expected to be in a wheelchair before age 40. While Ulla was lucky to develop what she calls a “mild case” her story of perseverance and new found enthusiasm for running makes us love what we do.
Back to Summer 2010…Here is what we have going on:
- Six beginning and intermediate women’s-only running/walking groups (Running for Women)
- Two co-ed beginning running groups (No Boundaries)
- One co-ed half-marathon training group.
While some of the groups have already begun, new training groups begin year round.
We have a variety of events coming up, including the Davisville Moo-nlight Half-Marathon and 5K. The Davisville Moo-nlight Half-Marathon and 5K is an evening running event that showcases Downtown Davis, Old North Davis, Community Park, and the beautiful North Davis Greenbelt. With a flat, fast, USATF certified course, this race is sure to become a classic. The 8:00pm (Half-Marathon) and 8:20pm (5K) start times, allow for runners and walkers tocompete in a summer race and avoid the Davis heat. Not only will the event offer runners a chance to participate in a local race, but proceeds from the event will benefit the Davis Schools Foundation.
We are looking forward to what this summer has to offer, and we can’t wait to share it with you!
